Which Floor Soundproofing Solution Do I Need?

The right floor soundproofing solution depends on the floor construction and whether you need to reduce impact noise, airborne noise or both.

For footsteps and impact noise, the priority is to isolate the finished floor from the structure below. Acoustic underlays, acoustic rubber and floating floor systems can help reduce vibration caused by footsteps, furniture movement and other impacts.

For voices, television and other airborne noise, additional mass and acoustic insulation may be required within or above the floor construction. A complete acoustic floor system will often perform better than relying on underlay alone where airborne sound is also a problem.

For timber floors, sound can travel through both the floorboards and the joist cavity. Combining acoustic insulation between the joists with suitable floor soundproofing products above can help address both airborne and impact noise. In some buildings, sound can also travel through adjoining walls and structural connections, so wall soundproofing systems may need to be considered where flanking transmission is contributing to the problem.

For concrete floors, acoustic underlays and resilient layers are commonly used to reduce impact sound passing into rooms below. The final floor finish and available floor height should be considered when selecting the system.

Identifying the floor type and the main noise problem first will make it easier to choose an appropriate build-up.
