Buying guide

Which acoustic board do I need?

Choosing the right acoustic board depends on the existing construction, the type of noise you're trying to reduce and the space available for installation. Different boards offer different combinations of mass, thickness and fixing requirements.

For high-mass soundproofing applications, Maxiboard is a specialist composite acoustic board designed for use in suitable wall and ceiling constructions. At 17mm thick, it provides a high-mass alternative to conventional plasterboard and can be incorporated into independent wall linings and acoustic ceiling systems.

For thinner wall and ceiling linings, dBoard provides a 13mm composite acoustic board combining gypsum with a polymeric layer. It is suitable for use within compatible wall and ceiling systems, including resilient bar and independent lining constructions.

For conventional stud walls and partitions, acoustic plasterboard can provide additional mass compared with standard plasterboard. It is commonly combined with acoustic insulation and appropriate framing to improve sound insulation between adjoining rooms.

For space-conscious direct-fix wall treatments, Acousticboard 4 offers a specialist four-layer composite board designed to reduce sound transmission through suitable existing walls. Its 30mm construction provides an alternative where an independent wall lining may not be practical.

For complete acoustic wall systems, the Opti Wall 140 dBoard acoustic system combines dBoard with insulation, resilient bars and additional plasterboard layers. This provides a more comprehensive approach where greater separation from the existing wall is required.

Remember that acoustic performance depends on the complete construction, not simply the board selected. Correct fixing methods, acoustic insulation, joint treatment and perimeter sealing are all important considerations.
