Product Information
Hush Mat 15 is a dense 15mm acoustic rubber floor mat designed to reduce impact sound, such as footsteps and furniture movement, while adding useful mass to floors where airborne sound also needs controlling.
Each 1250 x 1000mm sheet covers 1.25m², weighs approximately 18.75kg and is suitable for timber and concrete floor structures. Hush developed Mat 15 so that suitable engineered timber floors can be laid directly over it, removing the extra 9mm ply or MDF layer many acoustic underlays need. That saves floor height, time and cost. At Sound Insulation Store we supply genuine Hush Mat 15 with free technical advice on the right build-up for your floor.
Key benefits
- Reduces impact and footfall noise from footsteps, dropped items and furniture.
- 15kg/m² high-mass rubber that also contributes to airborne sound control within a complete floor system.
- Only 15mm thick: minimal change to floor levels, doors and thresholds.
- No overlay board needed for suitable engineered timber floors, subject to the flooring manufacturer's requirements.
- Timber or concrete floors, in new builds, conversions and refurbishments.
- 1.25m² per sheet, approximately 18.75kg, easy to cut and shape on site.
- Used within tested Hush separating-floor systems.
What is Hush Mat 15 used for?
Hush Mat 15 is a floor product for reducing noise transfer between floors in:
- Flats and apartments, including replacing carpet with hardwood or engineered timber
- Houses, HMOs and residential conversions
- Separating floors in new build and refurbishment projects
- Upgrades to existing timber joist floors and concrete or screeded floors
- Suitable residential and commercial spaces
How Hush Mat 15 works
Noise travels through floors in two ways. Impact sound is created when something strikes the floor, such as footsteps or a dropped object, and the vibration travels through the structure. Airborne sound, such as voices, TV and music, travels through the air and makes the floor and ceiling vibrate.
Hush Mat 15 acts as a resilient layer between your floor finish and the structure, absorbing impact energy before it reaches the floor below. Unlike most acoustic underlays, it also adds significant mass at 15kg/m², which helps resist airborne sound when combined with the right ceiling treatment.
Construction
Hush Mat 15 is an engineered acoustic rubber mat manufactured from rubber particles of differing densities, giving the black and green flecked finish shown in the images. The mixed-density structure provides both the resilience needed for impact sound reduction and the mass that contributes to airborne sound insulation.

Acoustic performance
Hush-System 2003 Plus tested performance:
These figures relate to the complete tested Hush-System 2003 Plus construction incorporating Hush Mat 15 and Hush-Bar Resilient Bars. They are not standalone reduction figures for Hush Mat 15. Results for other Hush constructions differ, so always work to the system you are building.
Building Regulations (Approved Document E)
Hush Mat 15 can form part of separating-floor systems designed and tested for Approved Document E requirements. Compliance depends on the complete floor and ceiling construction, including the structural floor, resilient treatment, ceiling, cavity absorption, perimeter detailing and flanking transmission. Installation guide
- Prepare the floor. The timber or concrete floor must be sound, dry, level and suitable for your chosen floor finish. Screw down any loose or squeaking boards.
- Plan the layout. Each sheet covers 1.25m². Plan sheet positions before cutting to keep joints tight and offcuts usable.
- Cut to size. Use a sharp, long-bladed trimming knife, scoring the surface and running the knife through several times rather than forcing one deep cut. Large scissors or tin snips work well for shaping, and a circular saw for repeated straight cuts.
- Lay and bond where required. Hush typically bonds Mat 15 to the floor structure with VS90+ adhesive (Mapei Ultrabond Eco VS90 Plus), and some Hush timber-floor systems specify Hush Contact Adhesive. Follow the system you are working to.
- Keep the resilient layer continuous. Butt sheets tightly with no gaps, and avoid rigid connections, such as fixings or skirtings, bridging the mat to the structure.
- Fit the floor finish in line with the flooring manufacturer's instructions.
Laying hardwood and engineered timber
Hush's installation diagram shows Hush Mat 15 beneath hardwood flooring over a timber floor, with Hush-Slab 100 between the joists. Hush publishes floor constructions with Mat 15 under suitable finished flooring, but not every hardwood product can automatically go directly over it. Always confirm with the applicable Hush system and your flooring manufacturer.
How many sheets do I need?
Divide your floor area by 1.25 and round up to the next full sheet, then add an allowance for cutting and waste. For example, a 20m² floor needs at least 16 sheets before waste.
Why choose Hush Mat 15?
- Designed by Hush Acoustics, a UK acoustic manufacturer with more than 30 years' experience.
- One layer instead of two for suitable engineered timber floors, with no extra ply or MDF overlay.
- Impact and airborne benefits from a single 15mm product.
- Expert support from our technical team on your floor and ceiling build-up.
Alternative to SB Matting 15
Looking for an alternative to SB Mat 15 Sound Barrier, also known as SB Matting 15mm? Hush Mat 15 is our alternative for projects requiring a dense 15mm acoustic rubber floor mat to control impact noise and contribute to airborne sound insulation.
- Matching sheet format: 1250 x 1000 x 15mm, covering 1.25m² per sheet.
- High acoustic mass: 15kg/m², approximately 18.75kg per sheet.
- Timber and concrete floors: suitable for the appropriate new-build, conversion or refurbishment construction.
- Suitable engineered timber finishes: can be installed directly above the mat where the flooring manufacturer's requirements and chosen build-up allow.
- Complete installation support: manufacturer downloads and relevant bonding, perimeter and floor-system accessories are provided on this page.
When replacing a named product in a specification, check the complete floor and ceiling construction, floor-finish compatibility and applicable test evidence. Matching mat dimensions alone does not establish identical tested system performance.
