Product Information
Hush Mat 12 is a 12mm recycled rubber acoustic floor mat for reducing impact noise and contributing to airborne sound insulation on separating floors.
Each 1250 x 1000mm sheet covers 1.25m² and weighs approximately 15kg. Suitable for timber, concrete and screeded floors, it offers a thinner option in the Hush Mat range where floor height matters. Sound Insulation Store supplies Hush Mat 12 for home improvements, residential conversions and trade projects.
Key benefits
- Resilient floor treatment: helps reduce the transmission of footfall and other impact noise.
- Added acoustic mass: contributes to controlling voices, television and other airborne noise as part of a complete construction.
- Low floor build-up: 12mm thickness leaves more room for the chosen floor finish and threshold detailing.
- Flexible sheet format: can be cut and shaped easily for room layouts.
- Recycled rubber construction: suitable for appropriate timber and concrete floor structures.
What is Hush Mat 12 used for?
Use it as an acoustic layer above a suitable structural floor in houses, apartments, HMOs and refurbishment projects. It can also be specified for suitable commercial, education and leisure applications. It is an underlay component, rather than a replacement for structural floorboards.
Which floor finishes can go over it?
Hush identifies both 12mm and 15mm Hush Mat as options directly beneath suitable laminate and engineered timber flooring. Confirm the flooring supplier's requirements for support, installation and warranty before ordering.
Do not assume the same arrangement suits thinner finishes, such as LVT or Linoleum. These finishes need their own compatible overlay board: solid timber or laminate thinner than 10mm requires a suitable fixing substrate such as Acoustilay MDF 6mm; tiles need a tongue and groove cement particle board, thin vinyl and LVT need a suitable smooth, stable surface such as Acoustilay MDF 9mm or Jumpax DualOverlay Board.
How it works
Impact noise starts with contact, such as a footstep, which sends vibration into the floor. A resilient layer cushions that contact. Airborne noise starts with sound in the air, such as speech or music, which makes the separating construction vibrate; the mat's mass contributes to the overall insulation.
The surrounding floor, ceiling, joints and edges remain important. Sound can travel around a treated floor through adjoining walls and other connected elements; this is called flanking transmission.

Acoustic performance and Part E
Performance depends on the complete floor and ceiling arrangement, including cavity treatment, perimeter isolation and installation quality. A finished-floor sound level is different from the number of decibels an underlay reduces on its own, so a system result should not be presented as a standalone reduction.
Where Building Regulations apply, select the complete construction for the project. Hush Mat 12 alone does not guarantee Approved Document E compliance. For a specified acoustic target, confirm the applicable Hush build-up and supporting test evidence before installation.
Installation guidance
- Choose the complete build-up. Confirm the supporting floor, ceiling and finish before starting. Check whether the specified system requires bonding, an overlay or additional perimeter treatment.
- Store correctly. Keep sheets flat and dry in a sealed, dry building.
- Plan the sheet layout. Measure the area and work out cuts before installation to make effective use of offcuts.
- Cut carefully. Hush recommends scoring with a sharp, long-bladed trimming knife and making repeated passes rather than tearing through the rubber.
- Bond and finish correctly. We recommend Mapei Ultrabond Eco VS90 Plus for bonding Hush Mat 12 to a suitable prepared substrate. Follow Mapei's application instructions and the specified Hush perimeter and finishing detail. Avoid rigid fixings bridging the resilient layer.
This is a planning summary. Use the applicable Hush instructions and the floor-finish manufacturer's guidance for the final installation detail.
How many sheets do I need?
Sheets required = floor area ÷ 1.25, rounded up. If you choose a cutting allowance, add it to the area before rounding. A 20m² floor needs 16 sheets without waste; with an optional 10% allowance it needs 18 sheets, covering 22.5m².
Hush Mat 12 or Hush Mat 15?
Hush Mat 12 is 12mm thick at 12kg/m². Hush Mat 15 is 15mm thick at 15kg/m², providing better results due to the added mass and resilient layer.
Alternative to SB Mat 12 and Pliteq GenieMat RST12
Comparing SB Sound Barrier Mat 12, also searched for as SB Matting 12mm, or Pliteq GenieMat RST12? Hush Mat 12 is an alternative 12mm acoustic rubber floor mat for projects requiring impact noise control and an additional contribution to airborne sound insulation.
- 12mm thickness: suitable where available floor height is limited.
- 1.25m² per sheet: 1250 x 1000mm, approximately 15kg per sheet.
- Timber, concrete and screeded floors: select the appropriate complete floor construction.
- Clear installation guidance: check the overlay requirements above for your chosen floor finish, with Mapei Ultrabond Eco VS90 Plus recommended for bonding.
