Who Is This Flats Sound-Test Package For?
Airborne and Impact Sound Testing Explained
Airborne wall testing measures how effectively a separating wall reduces sound such as speech, television and music between horizontally adjoining flats.
Airborne floor testing measures airborne noise travelling through a separating floor between vertically adjoining flats.
Impact floor testing measures structure-borne noise such as footsteps and dropped objects. A calibrated tapping machine is operated on the floor above while sound levels are measured in the dwelling below.

Impact Sound Testing

Sound-Testing Coverage
Our standard residential sound-testing area covers:
- England, excluding locations north of Middlesbrough and south of Exeter

How to Prepare for Part E Testing
Testing should be completed once construction is substantially complete and after second fix.
Floor-Covering Requirements
Impact sound testing should be carried out before final floor coverings are installed. The tapping machine must operate on the appropriate bare floor construction to provide a representative compliance measurement.
If a soft floor covering has already been fitted, at least 50% must be capable of being pulled back to expose the floor below. Any floor covering present during testing may be recorded in the report and could affect acceptance by Building Control.
Parking, Safety and Site Conditions
- Parking should be provided within approximately 20 metres of the test property
- Advise us before the visit if suitable parking cannot be provided
- Power tools and noisy construction work must be paused near all test rooms
- Vehicle movements close to the receiving rooms should be avoided
- Children, pets and unauthorised personnel must remain outside the test rooms
- The site contact must be available to provide access and sign off the visit
