1 Airborne Test Measures airborne noise passing through the separating floor, including speech, television and music.

This package is not normally appropriate where only a separating wall requires testing. A party-wall package containing airborne wall tests would generally be more suitable.

Airborne and Impact Sound Testing Explained

Airborne sound testing measures how effectively the separating floor reduces sound such as voices, music and television noise. A controlled loudspeaker source is operated in one dwelling while sound levels are measured in the adjoining dwelling.

Impact sound testing applies only to separating floors. A calibrated tapping machine produces a repeatable impact source on the floor above while transmitted sound levels are measured in the room below.

We recommend allowing approximately 7–10 working days’ notice wherever possible.

How to Prepare for Your Part E Floor Sound Test

Testing should be completed once construction is substantially complete and after second fix.

Doors and windows Internal and external doors and windows must be fitted, closable and complete.

Trickle vents Trickle vents must be fitted or capable of being temporarily blocked during testing.

Clear rooms Test rooms must be clear of furniture, debris and construction materials.

Electrical power A working 240V power socket is required in every test room.

Access Simultaneous access is required to the dwellings above and below the separating floor.

Site representative A site manager or authorised representative must remain available during the visit.

Floor-Covering Requirements

Impact sound testing should be carried out before final floor coverings are installed. The tapping machine needs to operate on the appropriate bare floor construction to provide a representative compliance measurement.

If a soft floor covering has already been fitted, at least 50% must be capable of being pulled back to expose the floor below. The presence of a floor covering may be recorded in the report and could affect acceptance by Building Control.

Parking, Safety and Site Conditions

Parking should be provided within approximately 20 metres of the test plot
Advise us before the visit if suitable parking cannot be provided
Power tools and noisy construction work must be paused near the test rooms
Vehicle movements close to the receiving room should be avoided
Children, pets and unauthorised personnel must remain outside the test rooms
The site contact must be available to provide access and sign off the visit

Safety notice: the airborne sound source can produce levels exceeding 110 dB(A) and may start remotely. Only the testing engineer may remain in the relevant room while the equipment is operating.
